"Hands-down, best chicken ever!"

"Your chickens are flavorful and juicy and even more importantly we know they were raised the right way, not in some factory farm."

"Best chickens and pork our family has ever tasted!"

"We feel so fortunate to have great farmers like Rob and April. We want to be connected to our food sources and the set up Rob and April have with our veggie CSA, Blooming Glen Farm, makes this so easy for us. We have a large share and get four chickens each month, one whole, one halved (great on the BBQ) and two pieced. The chickens are large, moist, and delicious. For a year I contemplated investing in the the chicken share and I am so glad we did. The chickens are better quality than the organic supermarket birds I had been purchasing. I always wondered how the supermarket birds were really treated, but I don't worry about the integrity of Ledemete Farm. Each month we also have the option to purchase pork products and we are LOVING the bacon and sausage, as well as the new experience of cooking and baking with lard (amazing texture and taste!). We could not be happier with the food and the service from Rob and April. If you are looking for local pork and poultry, look no further!"

"We are so fortunate to be able to obtain chicken and pork from Ledamete Grass Farm through our Pennypack Farm CSA. Last year we tried a small chicken share and were surprised how much different grass fed free range chicken tastes. So moist, flavorful, and fresh we increased our share for this year. Now we have the opportunity to get the turkey and pork products too. We are in hog heaven. I thought the chickens were great, the pork blew us away! Lean, light, flavorful, the most amazing pork we have ever had. The thought and care Rob and April give to raising their livestock is admirable and their hard work is reflected on the fork. We are proud to support local farms and organic practices. We tell everyone we know about being responsible and knowledgeable about where thier food comes from. Support local, support your health, and if your lucky enough to have the opportunity to try Ledamete, do it! Yum, yum, yum!!!! "

"This is our first year in Rob and April's CSA after learning about it through our vegetable CSA. While I always appreciated buying farm raised poultry whenever possible, I never would have imagined just how much better these pastured chickens could taste. I've met Rob and you can feel the integrity and passion he has for his work. It shows in the excellent flavor of the chickens. I can't wait to get to visit and try their other equally wholesome products."

About Our Chickens:
If given the opportunity, chickens will eat up to 30% of their diet in bugs, herbs and grasses. We allow our birds to scratch, dig and peck their days away. In addition to the forage they find, we provide our birds with grain, grown and milled fresh by a local farmer who utilizes organic methods.

The birds spend the first one to two weeks of their lives in a cozy and clean nursery, then out to pasture they go where they feast on the bugs, herbs and grasses they love in the bright sunshine. The birds find protection from predators and shelter from the elements in their movable pens.

The birds’ access to fresh air, exercise, sunshine, green grass and bugs creates very delicious and nutritious meat.

Hello farm members!

We are just one month away from the start of the CSA harvest season! We expect the first pickup days to be Tuesday June 3rd and Friday June 6th. The pickup times have changed for this season. CSA pickup will begin at 1 pm and end at 7 pm. Please be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to closing to allow time to gather your share. Another email with complete instructions for CSA pickup will be sent in 2 weeks. Keep an eye on your inbox!

EGG SHARES

Several members have inquired about the egg shares. Unfortunately we will not be able to do the egg shares with The Rodale Institute this year, as they lost some chickens over the winter and are re-building their flock. However, we will be offering Rodale eggs for sale and/or other local pastured eggs in the pickup barn.

BREAD SHARES

We are again offering bread shares from The Daily Loaf, based in Virginville, PA. Anna Shiffler bakes and delivers the breads to the farm on your pickup day. Fruit Shares

Would you like to pick up a CSA Fruit Share when you come to get your vegetables at the farm? It’s time to sign up NOW with North Star Orchard for their weekly Fruit Share, which is available for pickup for 12 weeks starting in August. CSA Members here have been enjoying the Fruit Share for years, and we encourage you to take a look at what the share has to offer here: http://www.northstarorchard.com/csa_fruit.php

This is not ordinary fruit, but unique and heritage varieties which are full of flavor: plums with pizazz, perfect peaches, amazing Asian pears, and astounding apples. Hello CSA members,

A winter interview that John did was recently posted on the web. It's a good interview and an interesting story (at least I think so, as it is our story!) and we thought you may enjoy it.

John tells the story of our farm; how we got started in farming, and our goals for the future, on Jacks Farm Radio Show. Click on the link to listen to the interview. (You need to hit the play button in the left corner, under the picture of John, to start the podcast.) Enjoy!

SPRING UPDATE FROM THE FARM!

Yes, spring is officially here! John was finally able to begin spading the cover crops into the fields slated for spring production two weeks ago. Turning these cover crops into the soil will improve soil fertility and help to "feed" the spring crops. Even more exciting, the first seeds were planted in the field: many rows of sugar snap peas, spring carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, and more. The first vegetable starts from the greenhouse were transplanted into the field as well: many varieties of lettuce, as well as broccoli and cabbage.

Today the farm crew is planting out the onions! New this year, we are planting the onions with a reflective silver plastic mulch, which is supposed to repel thrips, a common pest of onions which can affect their storage quality. We are hopeful this will improve the keeping quality of our onions.

The onion starts grew very well in the greenhouse this year, with excellent germination and growth rates. Despite the cold weather this spring, we had plenty of sunshine which keeps the greenhouse warm. You can see the onion starts above, growing in their cell trays.

While we are getting the fields ready and planting out the cool crops, we are also quite busy in the greenhouse, starting the plants for the season. Many crops are sown into seeding flats, for quicker germination on our special heat mats which warm the soil. These crops, such as broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc. are then transplanted from their seeding flats into their cell trays. In the above picture on the right, John is separating broccoli seedlings to prepare them for setting in their cell trays.

The early tomatoes, pictured above, will be grown in the protection of the field high tunnel, as it is too cold to plantthem outside in April. The high tunnel provides a few extra degrees of frost protection, and we can add more by using row covers inside it. We push the season with the early tomatoes to try for harvest by the beginning of July. We also graft these tomatoes, which is why you see the little orange clips on them. We grow a separate tomato plant called a rootstock, which is a super hardy, vigorous, and disease resistant variety. Then we splice the top of the tomato variety we want onto the rootstock, to join the plants into one. This is a delicate process that takes a few weeks and several steps to get the plants to physically join and grow together as one. Grafting allows for extremely productive, vigorous, healthy plants with delicious early tomatoes. Grafting has long been done for fruit trees, and more and more people are using it in organic vegetable production now. We plan to experiment with grafting cucumbers this year.

CSA MEMBERSHIPS & PICKUP DAYS

We have 25 shares available, although Tuesday pickup is almost sold out. If you have friends or neighbors who are interested in joining the farm, please send them to our website, www.quietcreekfarmcsa.com. Membership information is on our Join the Farm page.

More people have signed up for Tuesday pickup than Friday pickup. We try to have nearly equal numbers on each day, to make it easier to plan for the harvest. If anyone is signed up for Tuesday and would like to switch to Friday, please let me know. Thanks!

COOPERATIVE SHARES AVAILABLE!

Shares of local fruit, cheese, pastured poultry, and wood-fired pizza are available to our members. For these shares, you must sign up with the partnering farm who offers the share, and they will be delivered to Quiet Creek Farm on your pickup day. I will send out separate emails from our Cooperative Farm Share partners, with information about their respective share offerings, for those of you who missed it. If you have already signed up for any of the cooperative shares, please disregard!

Thanks and happy spring!

Plus a sprinkling of heritage pear varieties and hopefully this year, some table grapes! If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this one consists, in part, of these:  sweet, tart, juicy, crunchy, crisp, aromatic, sugary-tart, rich, velvety, smile, slurp.

I can't wait to get to visit and try their other equally wholesome products."

ahsachickens2Amazing flavor and nutrition! Because of their constant access to pasture, their tender and flavorful meat is nutrient-dense and high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Locally & Organically Grown!
The chicks are from a hatchery in Quakertown; the grain is organically grown (non-certified) and milled in Oley; and the chickens are raised and processed in Schnecksville. It doesn't get much more local than that!

It's so convenient!
You can pick up your chickens at your veggie CSA for a one-stop shop.

Know your Farmer!
You can connect with your food and the people who raise it. Rob and April live and work on the farm every day. They are happy to answer questions and to share the latest news from the farm.

Access to Artisanal Products

Don't buy food from strangers, know your farmer! turkeys_oct2013

How it works:

Once a month for six months you get to pick up artisan frozen wood oven pizza at Quiet Creek to enjoy at home. Do you like to make your own pizza with Quiet Creek's awesome produce? Choose either a traditional Neapolitan par baked crust or an organic whole-wheat crust and get creative!

About our pizza:

Switchback Pizza (Drew and Marguerite) makes our pizza using local vegetables, pastured meats, artisan dough and sauce.

The dough is cold fermented for 36 hours allowing them to develop a unique natural sweetness. The Neapolitan dough is made with organic unbleached white and whole-wheat flours combined with artisan flour, salt, water and yeast. The 100% organic whole-wheat dough is 50% whole-wheat flour combined with unbleached flour, salt, water and yeast.

We strive to use as many local and organic ingredients as possible. All our cheeses are hormone and antibiotic free and we use local naturally raised hormone/ antibiotic free meats. We custom make our own pepperoni in order to provide you a naturally raised pepperoni.  Come July we will have our own organically grown farm raised garlic to use on our pizzas!
