LAST CALL FOR POTATOES &/OR CABBAGE

Yes, we still have some potatoes. And the mild weather has allowed for one final harvest of cabbages (great for making sauerkraut and/or kimchi). So if anyone would like to order additional potatoes or cabbages, please reply to this email. Let me know what you would like and we can make arrangements for pickup, etc.

Potatoes are still 50 lbs for $40. (For quantities less than 25 lbs, $1/lb). Cabbages are $1/lb for up to 25 lbs (about 6 cabbages). For over 25 lbs, price is $.80/lb

THANK YOU!

Again, we just want to thank you all, our members, for being a part of this farm, for believing in the importance of local organic food, and for making a big commitment. Because it is indeed a big commitment; to cook fresh foods from scratch for your family, to come out to the farm each week, to pick in the gardens, to accept the bounty and failures of the farm each season. As supporters of this farm and CSA, you embrace the true nature of farming, and bring it into your home and your lives. We hope the farm provides nourishment for your body and spirit, as it does for our family.

CSA Share Renewal:

New renewal form! The previous form was missing the mailing address - sorry! I have updated it, and the new 2016 Member Registration Form is here. If you brought your renewal to the farm, I will be processing renewals this week, and you should receive a confirmation email from me in the next few days.

To renew your share for next season, please complete the membership form and return the first page along with $100 deposit or payment in full. Keep the second page for your records.  If including deposit only, please submit post-dated checks for payment plans along with the membership form. All current members have the first opportunity to reserve a share for the 2016 season. Quiet Creek Farm will be located at The Rodale Institute for the 2016 season. In 2015, almost 75% of members rom 2015 chose to pay by check or cash. So, in order to streamline our book-keeping, we will no longer be accepting online credit card payments for CSA shares, and members will not be signing up online.

Any questions, please let us know!

FARM NEWS: Hard to believe we have come to the end of another season. It is always a bit sad, coming to the end of the season, the gardens being put to bed for the winter, under a nice cover of grain crops and legumes to keep the soil covered and build fertility. But it is also a time to celebrate, and remember what a wonderful harvest we have had! We are especially excited about this year, as it marks our 10th season. 10 years of farming with and for our community of members, as supporting partners. We thank you! We can only do this together with you!

CSA Share Renewal:

Now is a great time to renew your share for next season, so you do not miss out on another great harvest of vegetables from Quiet Creek Farm, located at The Rodale Institute. All current members have the first opportunity to reserve a share for the 2016 season, and spots are held until the end of 2015. It is very easy to renew. Read how below.

THE HARVEST

Cabbage

Carrots

Celeriac (celery root - see recipes & tips below)

Garlic

Leeks

Kale &/or Spinach

Onions

Potatoes - lots!

Sweet Potatoes

Winter squash

UPICK: Goodbye Upick garden - see you next year!

RECIPES

Celeriac is the most underappreciated root vegetable. It is also called celery root, but it is an entirely different plant than the stalk celery. Celeriac is very common in Europe. It has a wonderful taste and keeps extremely well. It is very versatile. After peeling off the fuzzy and bumpy skin, you can dice it for soup and casseroles, cut it into cubes for roasting with other root veggies, grate it raw for salads, slice it with potatoes for a delicious gratin, boil and mash it with potatoes, etc.

Check out some recipes on our website: type celeriac into the RECIPE search box to view some of my favorites:

Golden Roots & Greens Soup

Creamy Autumn Soup: (topped with chopped apples & cheddar cheese, my kids love this!)

Maple-Bacon Roasted Apples & Celeriac

ENJOY!

FARM NEWS: Well Jack Frost visited the farm last night. The fields were covered in an intricate web of lacy ice this morning. It was truly beautiful, sparkling in the morning light. This does mean the end of those sweet cherry tomatoes - we were quite lucky to have them for so long! All the hardy roots and greens should be fine. We will see later today as the plants thaw out.

Many of you have asked about the winter squash. Most seasons, we have distributed the early winter squash, Delicata and Sunshine, by now. However, this season the winter squash suffered. A bacterial wilt as well as mildew diseases arrived early this summer, while the squash plants were still flowering and beginning to form fruits. The diseases caused great damage to the plants and we lost many fruits. Most years these diseases come later in the season, and begin to kill the plants after the squash is mature, so it does not affect the yields. Nevertheless, we do have some butternut squashes that survived and we will be distributing them the last week of CSA pickup. We are disappointed that we will not be able to provide a bounty of winter squash this season. However, this is the nature of farming. It is a rare season indeed where every crop is excellent (never!), and we have been blessed with quite a bounty of vegetables from the farm throughout this season. Thank you for sharing the harvest this year!

THE HARVEST

Broccoli

Carrots

Garlic

Onions

Peppers

Potatoes

Leeks

Possibly spinach &/or salad mix

Coming soon: Winter squash

UPICK: Goodbye Upick garden - see you next year!

RECIPES

* With broccoli heads as large as a dinner plate, our cups are overflowing. If you want to put up some broccoli for the winter, here are 2 ways to Freeze Broccoli:

As Florets: Cut broccoli stalks into florets. Steam florets in colander for about 2-3 minutes(or blanch in boiling water 1 minute) , just until broccoli begins to turn bright green. Immediately dip into ice water bath to cool. Dry on towel and pack into pint-sized freezer bags or containers, squeezing out excess air.

As Soup: Make your favorite Cream of Broccoli Soup Recipe, minus the cream. Freeze in pint or quart containers, labeling with recipe and date. For recipe ideas see: Green Monster Soup (Broccoli and Cheese Soup) or Cream of Broccoli soup.

* Here is a link for a Harvest Cake, which sounds delicious, with a cinnamon-apple cider icing. It incorporates grated apple, carrot, parsnip, and zucchini. I imagine you could sub. for some of the veg. as long as you equal the total amount. Thanks to CSA member Dorothy Siravo for contributing!
